Face Yoga FAQs

When should I start face yoga?

Today!! It is never too early or too late to start benefiting from the techniques of face yoga, both today and for the future. It is such a natural way to reduce and prevent the signs of ageing. It is also a very effective way to reduce stress and tension – which we so often show on our face and can be very ageing!

What causes the face to age?

  • Weakening of the face muscles
  • Poor lymph flow
  • Break down of connective tissue
  • Stress
  • Losing collagen and elastin
  • Poor circulation
  • Excess toxins
  • Excess sun
  • Harsh weather conditions –
  • Wind/cold etc.
  • Pollution
  • Cigarettes, alcohol and drugs
  • Lack of sleep
  • Lack of exercise

How will Face Yoga affect my skin?

Face Yoga exercises work all 3 layers of the skin – the hypodermis (the muscles and fatty tissue), the dermis (connective tissue) and the epidermis (the cells). Working these layers of skin boosts blood flow, enabling more oxygen and nourishment to reach the cells in the upper layer of the skin. The result is a clear, healthy complexion with a luminous glow; the skin contains less toxins and is therefore able to absorb moisture more easily. Massaging your face also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in the middle layer of the skin resulting in smoother, tightened skin.

How regularly should I do Face Yoga?

We suggest you try to do at least 10 minutes of Face Yoga 6 days a week – consistency is key for achieving the best results; however, we understand this isn’t always possible so do what you can – the results will just take longer.

What do I need to do Face Yoga?

In short, very little! Your hands are your greatest tool and really all you need, and a mirror to check your hands are positioned correctly. We also suggest you use a little face oil for the massage techniques to prevent your fingers from dragging the skin.

When you feel like mixing it up, you can try face tools such as Gua Sha stones, crystal rollers, dry brushes and gold derma rollers.

Should I use a moisturiser or serum at any stage whilst doing Face Yoga?

We do recommend applying a light moisturiser or oil-based serum for the facial massage and relaxation exercises as they help the fingers glide across the skin better. Use a product that you feel comfortable with that you know works well with your skin.

Does it matter if I don’t do Face Yoga for a while?

We all go through periods where we let our health and beauty routines lapse a little, when life is just too hectic. However, we do recommend that you try and do something six days a week, fitting it in wherever you have a moment to spare, whether that is whilst boiling the kettle or when in the shower. However, don’t despair, if you do take a little break, you may notice a slight difference in the muscle tone in your face, but muscle memory will mean that it will be easy to pick up where you left off.

What health and safety aspects should I consider?

Always work to your own level and consider your own particular health. If there is anything you are worried about e.g. skin conditions or past injuries, then it is important to consult a doctor before practising Facial Yoga. However, if you follow the exercises faithfully as instructed, they are safe to practice and beneficial for your health and wellbeing.

Always ensure your hands are clean before you start.

Won’t touching and exercising my face give me more wrinkles?

No, these exercises are carefully designed to work with all three layers of the skin without breaking down the connective tissue. Massaging your face in the correct way improves circulation, helps remove toxins and reduces tension which leads to firmer and smoother skin.

Working out the muscles in your face builds the muscle fibre which creates a lifting effect, and promotes a more youthful face.

Can I do Face Yoga if I have had injectables or cosmetic surgery?

All exercises are completely safe to do if you’ve had cosmetic surgery, though it is important to check with your doctor to ensure that enough time has lapsed and that your face has healed.

Facial Yoga can still provide great benefits, even if you have had cosmetic surgery, and reports suggest that Facial Yoga can reduce the need for further surgery in the future.
